- If there is a fire hydrant near your home, help us by keeping it clear of
snow and debris!
- Give space heaters space. Keep them away from paper, furniture,
curtains, and other flammable items. Never leave them unattended.
- NEVER use an oven or stove to heat a room.
- Have your chimney cleaned.
- Have your furnace serviced. Do not attempt repairs yourself. NEVER
attempt to burn fuel that your furnace is not designed for!
- Do not leave fireplaces unattended. Use a screen to contain embers.
NEVER use starter fluid, gasoline, or other accelerants to light a fireplace!
- Discard of fireplace ashes properly! Place ashes in a metal container
outside and away from buildings.
- NEVER store gasoline and other fuels indoors! Leave them outside and
always use approved containers.
- Dispose of gasoline properly. DO NOT pour fuel or oil into a storm drain
or waste pipe. Bring it to the Highway Department for proper disposal.
- If you have not done so already, replace the batteries in your smoke and
carbon monoxide detectors. REMINDER: carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless! Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are designed to be replaced every 5 - 10 years depending on the manufacturer.
